NFB hails role of SPPs

The National Federation of Builders (NFB) has hailed the role Strategic Place Partnerships, or SPPs, can play.

The trade body sees these as overcoming barriers to investment and unlocking more construction work.

Specifically, the NFB looked at the recent Homes England deal which saw the government agency invest over £120m in a brownfield site in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

This project, called the Forth Yards plan, has the aim of unlocking 2,500 homes.

“The Forth Yards plan shows that the government understands their role in unlocking projects and investment potential, particularly in regions where land values are low and the cost of remediation high,” said Richard Beresford, CEO at the NFB.

The SPP in this specific project required coordination and agreement between local, regional and national governments.

Now, the NFB hopes that other SPP can be created off the back of this success.

Rico Wojtulewicz, head of policy and market insight at the NFB, added: “The partnership between the North East Mayor, Newcastle City Council, Network Rail, and Homes England will serve as a fantastic test case for how complex and expensive sites can be unlocked, particularly under the SPP policy.

“It is an exciting change in placemaking and highlights the importance of regional development strategies.”
